In 1995 Guy set out to expose talented black comedians to a more mainstream audience. He met with The Comedy Store and asked if he could have his own comedy night. With no, business, management or comedy club experience, and not being even a regular at The Comedy Store, he was granted a four week trial run in the club’s smallest venue with a capacity of only 90 seats, called the “Belly Room”. That would be the birth of the greatest night in comedy history, Guy Torry’s Phat Tuesdays. Eventually Phat Tuesdays became the place to be and the night exploded. It would attract not only comedians who were thirsty for attention, but also stars who wanted to be seen. The industry took notice as well and would also gravitate toward the night, finding it safer to scout black talent. However, after nine months in the club’s smaller room, it could no longer hold the demand for this new phenomenon. Guy was forced to move the night to The Store’s 400 seat venue, “The Main Room” and soon afterwards it became the club’s main attraction.
